Tree Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

Smart Trees Ltd gets many requests for information to do with all aspects of arboriculture and with that in mind, we have tried to list as many as we can below to assist you. If you have a question that does not have an answer in the list, please let us know through the Contact page, we will get back to you with a reply very quickly and also add it to the list for others to take on board.

1. What is a Tree Preservation Order (TPO)?
It is an order made by a Local Planning Authority (see the Links page for details), which in general makes it an offence to cut down, top, lop, uproot, willfully damage or willfully destroy a tree without the Planning Authority´s permission.

2. What type of trees can be covered by an order?
All types, including hedgerow trees, but not hedges, bushes or shrubs. The order can cover anything from a single tree to whole woodlands.

3. How can I find out if a tree is covered by an order?
Details of orders are available for inspection at the Local Planning Authority´s offices.

Smart Trees Ltd offer a full administration service for this situation and will take on all necessary planning. If you would like more information on this subject or would like to download an application for work on trees form, then please see our Important Links page and select your local council.

4. Is Smart Trees Ltd a fully qualified and insured contractor?
Tree work is a highly skilled and potentially dangerous profession and for that reason should not be carried out by any untrained persons. Health and Safety is at the top of Smart Tree´s priorities, all of our employees are fully qualified to NPTC standards and they are extremely experienced in all aspects of tree surgery operations. We are also fully insured for up to £5,000,000. A copy of our liability insurance is provided HERE.

5. When is the best time of year to cut my tree?
The old arborist saying goes, “The best time to prune is when the pruners are sharp”, meaning that trees can be pruned at any time. This is still true for most trees, although there are some points to consider and some limited exceptions to the rule.
Best Pruning Time: The best time to prune a tree is in late winter, just before the tree breaks dormancy. The cut will heal quickly because trees grow vigorously in early spring. A few trees, like magnolias, flower on wood grown the previous year. Early pruning could easily remove all the dormant buds, resulting in a non-flowering tree. These trees, and shrubs that bloom on old growth, should be pruned just after they flower.
Worst Pruning Time:  The only really bad time to prune a tree is in spring while the buds are developing. If the buds are beginning to swell, leave the tree alone until the leaves have grown to their mature size. Then it is safe to prune. Trimming a tree while the leaves are expanding disturbs the tree's growth and causes it a lot of stress.

6. How much will your services cost?
The cost of maintaining your trees does not necessarily have to cost a fortune and often our customers are surprised at the low cost and the time scale that the work can be carried out in. Quoting for any work needs to be done on site, because it is impossible to give any kind of realistic quotation over the phone due to the many factors that can affect the overall price such as: obstacles, access, TPO/conservation areas, power lines/phone lines, condition of tree and so on...

We offer a free of charge quotation and all work will be priced at the very lowest and fairest cost to all our valued customers and more importantly delivered to the highest standard. There is also now an estimate page where you can send us the details of the work you want and additional information and we will send you a rough estimate by return. It will give you a guide but you will still require a site visit for a full complete quotation.

We hope that these answers have been useful to you, but remember, if you need an answer and you cannot find it here, please contact us and we will reply to you very quickly.
